Ben Gran Volunteer WinnerVolunteer Service Award winner:  Helping everybody win
“What if every child in this city could spend one hour each week reading with a caring adult role model?” asked Ben Gran, operations analyst with the Corporate Manuals team in Des Moines. “I think we would see kids getting better test scores. We’d see fewer kids using drugs, committing crimes or engaging in other destructive behavior.  We’d see fewer kids going to prison and more kids graduating from college.”

On May 5 th, 2006, Everybody Wins! Iowa held a showcase of the reading and mentoring program at Capitol View Elementary School.  The guests of honor at the event were Senator Tom Harkin and Lt. Governor Sally Pederson. They spoke to the business and community leaders, elementary school students, adult reading mentors, and EW! Board members in attendance about the importance of literacy and the value of a committed adult mentor.

“Mentoring and reading with a student like Amii puts into perspective the critical role each of us plays in opening the doors of opportunity for all of our nation’s children,” says Harkin. “Our vision with Everybody Wins! DC is simple and straightforward, yet can bring about profound change in the lives of young students: expose children to literature, give them a positive role model, inspire them to read, and you will make a difference in their lives.”

During the showcase, Senator Harkin announced that Everybody Wins! Iowa has received a challenge grant in the amount of $40,000.  He also encouraged business and community leaders to continue to support Everybody Wins! Iowa through promoting Power Lunch to their employees as a great volunteer opportunity as well as giving generously to the program.  After a few words given by the Senator and Lt. Governor, the business and community leaders were able to spend time with the the 4th and 5th grade Everybody Wins! students and their mentors as they shared their positive experiences with the Everybody Wins! program.
